Nest Hollow is dedicated to the idea of backyard bird conservation. This takes backyard birding to a whole different level – it’s about more than feeding and watching birds – it’s about protecting native birds and beyond. It’s about maintaining the balance of local ecosystems. It’s about prioritizing nature over our own pleasure.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy watching our backyard birds. When responsibly managing backyard birds, birdwatching becomes far more enjoyable.
Imagine finding native bird nests around your yard. Imagine watching nestlings thrive and come back year after year. Imagine seeing an increase in bird diversity.
Not only can that be achieved when building a true backyard bird sanctuary, but you can feel proud that you are directly and positively impacting the environment.

Helping Cavity Nesting Birds
Native North American cavity nesting birds are of special interest to Nest Hollow. Habitat loss and invasive species (particularly house sparrows and European starlings) pose significant risks to these bird populations.
Have you ever wondered why you don’t see very many bluebirds? Or perhaps you may not have realized it, but Purple Martins are almost dependent on human providing nesting spots. This is because intervening conservation efforts are now necessary to prevent the decline of these species.
We continue to build out resources that help you become responsible bird landlords.
Non-exhaustive list of cavity nesting birds
- bluebirds (eastern, western and mountain)
- chickadees (black capped and Carolina)
- titmice
- northern flickers
- downy woodpeckers
- all native woodpeckers
- swallows (tree, barn, etc.)
- owls
- purple martins
- wood ducks
- house wrens
