This section is dedicated specifically to bluebird predator protections – whether snakes, cats, raccoons or something else, learn all about what threatens bluebirds and the best ways to protect them under different circumstances. To keep it brief, you’ll find the best way to protect them is a very tall stovepipe baffle that is at least 8 inches in diameter and at least 24 inches tall. However, taller baffles are becoming more and more recommended.

Managing Native Competition Species

Bluebirds are cavity nesting birds, which means they only nest in tree holes and nest boxes. But there are several other native cavity nesters that also compete for nesting sites. The house wren is perhaps the most infamous. But tree swallows, chickadees and titmice are just a few other examples.

Managing Invasive Species (House Sparrows and Starlings)

House sparrows and European starlings are an invasive species in North America. They are not federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). They have proliferated in North American and cause a toll on our native cavity nesting birds because these two invasive birds kill native birds for their nesting sites.

To responsibly care for bluebirds or other native birds, especially cavity nesters, it is very important to become well informed about managing invasive birds. We will continue to compile more and more resources to help you along this journey.
