Description

Upgrade your nest box and enjoy the ease of use!

What a game changer! The Peterson bluebird nest box is a trusted box style by seasoned bluebird trail monitors. And it’s no wonder. This design not only attracts bluebirds, but other beautiful native cavity birds. There are some key benefits to this unique design:

  • Sloped design keeps rain out and keeps the nest dry.
  • Sloped design helps bird landlords remove blowflies and other potential pests.
  • It attracts many other cavity nesting birds: Prothonotary warblers, chickadees, tree swallows and more!
  • This box is well ventilated, which is is critical during the hot period of nesting season.
  • The access door opens from the top down for easy monitoring and cleaning
  • Nest entry hole size is perfect for all bluebird species (eastern, mountain and western bluebirds).

Healthy fledglings will encourage your birds to come back

Studies have shown that the Peterson box , with all of its advantages helps cavity nesting birds rear healthier fledglings. And successful broods mean your birds are more likely to return annually and nest in the same box again.

The types of birds you might see:

While the Peterson bluebird nest box is designed for bluebirds, this nest box will draw plenty of other native cavity nesting birds:

  • All species of bluebirds: eastern, mountain and western
  • Chickadees
  • House wrens
  • Prothonotary warblers
  • Tree swallows
  • Tufted titmice
  • Violet green swallows

Design specs that help your birds thrive

When it comes to nest boxes / birdhouses, we only endorse the very best. The reason the Peterson box makes the mark is because so many trail monitors trust it. In fact, they trust this design so well, they implement it over other design styles.

To help you make your decision so you’re absolutely sure, here are the important specifications.

  • Nest Hole Entry Size: 1.5 inches x 2 inches (Ideal for eastern bluebirds, western bluebirds, tree swallows, chickadees, tufted titmouse, nut hatches and house wrens). This is too small for mountain bluebirds.
  • Drainage & Ventilation: Drainage and ventilation is essential for keeping the nest box dry and cool during hot summer days.
    • Drainage: The nest box allows any water that may have gotten in to drain out of the bottom. However, the advantage of the Peterson design is that the slope of the box makes it harder for water to get into the nest box. In our experience, this nest box has stayed pretty dry even during heavy rains.
    • Ventilation: There are 2 ventilation holes on each side of the nest box. Ventilation allows airflow in the box, which is critical on hot summer days.
  • Fledge Grooves: This nest box has interior horizontal grooves just beneath the nest entry hole to help fledglings and nestlings grasp inside and prepare to exit the box.
  • Front Panel Opening: Inspect the nest and clean it out easily for multiple broods using the front-opening pivot. The pivot is on the bottom, and the opening latch is at the top, allowing the box panel to be opened from top to bottom.

Important Notes:

  • This box design is better suited for experienced bird landlords. If you’ve managed nest boxes successfully for one or two years, then transitioning to the Peterson design is a good idea.
  • Not suited for new and inexperienced bird landlords. Instead, we recommend the ultimate starter house.
  • Things to watch out for:
    • The sloped design can cause potential for nestlings to fall out when inspecting (again, for experienced birders).
    • The narrow bottom can cause space competition as fledglings get older – this could lead to early fledging.
    • Do not disregard the need for baffles and other predator protection. The Peterson design may minimize predatory threats, but an 8″x24″ stovepipe style baffle and proper mounting is important.

Cleaning Resources:

Below are resources for keeping your nest box clean. Besides cleaning your nest box annually, we advise cleaning your nest box out completely after every brood. This will prevent mites from accumulating, minimize blowflies, allow you to prevent wasps, and keeps your birds healthy.
