Description

Keep starlings out of your yard while feeding native birds

Upside down suet feeders are no obstacle for native clinging birds such as woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches. But invasive starlings tend not to be able to balance this obstacle.

This small suet feeder ensures you’re able to have plenty of food for your native bird population without starlings hoarding your suet, running you dry.

Made from recycled material

This upside down suet feeder is made from recycled material, giving you a more sustainable option while feeding your birds. Environmentally, it’s a win-win.

Other benefits & features:

  • Uses standard suet bricks
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean and disinfect
  • Long-lasting because it’s made from recycled plastic
  • Natural coloring adds to your backyard aesthetic

Tips for use:

  • When starting out, you may want to use a wire or string to fix this suet feeder into a tilted position. While woodpeckers are able to easily use this feeder, it can sometimes take some training. Nuthatches (the upside down bird) probably won’t need much training to use this suet feeder.
  • We advise you not begin using this feeder until temperatures begin to get fairly cold. During early to mid fall, bugs and berries are still plentiful, meaning you may not get much use out of it immediately.

Wait, why don’t we want to feed starlings?

  • Starlings send a scout bird to a yard first. Once the scout is sure of the food supply, the entire flock will come, draining your seed in a matter of hours. They will come day after day if you keep putting food out, and this eventually becomes very expensive.
  • The more important reason is that European Starlings are invasive birds (not native to North American). Though these birds are beautiful and interesting, they ruthlessly kill native birds for nesting and roosting spaces. They viscously attack native woodpeckers, including northern flickers. Ultimately, Starlings cause a decline in the native bird population.
  • To help native birds in your backyard thrive, take steps to prevent invasive birds (European Starlings and old world sparrows such as the house sparrow) from coming to your yard.
