Description
Vital nest box protection: bluebirds, chickadees, tree swallows & more!
The Erva Brand 8″x28″ stoviepipe baffle offers one of best modes of protection for your native nesting cavity birds.
Stovepipe baffles of this size can protect against invasions from: squirrels, cats, raccoons and small snakes.
For best results, ensure that your baffle is properly mounted about 10 inches – 20 inches under your nest box. Additionally, ensure the baffle wobbles.
The instability of a wobbling baffle makes it more difficult for climbing predators to successfully invade a nest box.
A note about Erva Products
Nest Hollow selected Erva as one of our suppliers due to quality and service. Erva makes sturdy, durable products, and has been in the songbird business for quite a while.
List of species the 8″ x 28″ baffle protects against:
Raccoons, squirrels, even opossums will be tempted by eggs, nestlings and adult birds, but larger stovepipe baffles protect against these intrusions as well as other predators:
- cats
- chipmunks
- opossums
- raccoons
- snakes up to 3 feet long
- squirrels
NOTE: No mode of predator protection is 100% effective. Larger snakes may still infiltrate the box, and so can savvy mammals. But providing a tall, wide, wobbling baffle is better than nothing at all.
Consider this about snakes!
Don’t think you have snakes in your yard? Think again. So often because people haven’t observed snakes, they don’t believe they’re out there – not until they discover one in a nest box, having eaten the eggs or nestlings.
An important note: This baffle will only protect against smaller snakes. Larger snakes, 4-5 feet long or longer will be able to get past this barrier. For larger snakes, you’ll want to craft your own baffle. This can be done using duct pipe and a pipe cap or hardware wire from hardware stores.
