All the Basics to Ensure a Healthy Nest!
When it comes to nest boxes / birdhouses, we are very particular. We will only carry the best products on our website to ensure survival and success. So here are the specifications so you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you need:
- Nest Hole Entry Size: 1-9/16inches, ideal size for all three bluebird species (Eastern, Western and Mountain), as well as working for chickadees, tree swallows, titmice, great crested flycatchers and other cavity birds.
- Nest Box Dimensions:
- Interior Floor: 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches
- Interior Height: 9 inches (with a slanted roof)
- Interior Width: 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches
- Drainage & Ventilation: Drainage and ventilation is essential for keeping the nest box dry and cool during hot summer days.
- Drainage: Woodlink boxes only allow drainage near the door. The door is meant to be spaced just a little bit apart from the floor (but prevented from opening further by a little metal stopper). This spacing allows a little bit of drainage. Though, the nest box should remain generally dry with little need for drainage.
- Ventilation: There are two ventilation notches on the upper side panels opposite from one another to ensure air flow. There is also a gap between the front panel and roof allowing more air flow inside. Some monitors drill holes into the upper side panels using a 3/4 inch drill bit.
- Fledge Grooves: Woodlink brand boxes no longer come with kerfs or fledge grooves on the inside of the box. However, it is not hard to score them in. Use an awl, flat-head screwdriver or box knife and carefully score lines just beneath the entry hole. This helps fledglings cling to the front when they’re ready to fledge.
- Front Panel Opening: Inspect the nest and clean it out easily for multiple broods using the front-opening pivot.
Built according to the North American Bluebird Society specifications
This nest box has been made according to specifications and guidelines outlined by the North American Bluebird Society, which means its designed according the natural needs of bluebirds.
If you’re hoping for other birds, no worries. This box will perfectly satisfy tree swallows, violet green swallows, chickadees, house wrens, tufted titmouse and nut hatches.
For the smaller cavity birds such as chickadees and house wrens, we recommend a hole reducer. This will protect them from eviction.
